Today, Yandex led by Alexander Sadovsky have decided to make a change on their previous non-link-value decision. Links will again be part of the ranking factor but not only positively! They will also give a NEGATIVE effect to the ones working with bought links. This is a massive change on behalf of Yandex and will probably affect the ranking for a very large number of websites.
The change will begin to be rolled out gradually from May. It will cover ALL regions, ALL search queries and ALL Websites. As I said before: Huge impact to be expected on Yandex SERPS moving forward.
Why are Yandex making this change? About a year ago Yandex head of Search, Alexander Sadovsky, announced that they will begin to disregard links as a ranking-factor. This was big news in the SEO-world since links have been one of the major ranking factors up until that point. They expected the number of link buyers to go down rapidly when they announced the non-link policy a year ago. However, the result (according to themselves) was that the number of Paid links only dropped with around 16 % in total. So the reason for this turn around is to speed everything up and clean up the link mess that is still live and kicking in Russia.
As a side note, this change seems to be very much similar on how Google is working with links.
We will of course cover this more in detail over the next coming days/weeks with follow up posts on what you as web master should do in order to come out from this change in good shape.
